Why Bathroom Waterproofing Matters
The waterproofing membrane is the one part of a bathroom you never see and can’t easily inspect once the tiles are down — yet it’s what stops water soaking into wall framing, subfloors and the rooms next door. When it fails, the damage is usually well advanced before anyone notices, which is why it’s worth doing properly the first time.
Where Wet Areas Fail
Most bathroom leaks trace back to a handful of causes: membrane applied too thin or not taken high enough, corners and floor-to-wall junctions left unreinforced, and gaps left around taps, drains and pipe penetrations. Brisbane’s humidity and heavy summer storms only add to the load, so these details have to be right the first time.
How We Waterproof a Wet Area
No two wet areas are the same, so every job follows the same careful sequence rather than a one-size-fits-all fix:
- Assessment – we check the falls to the drain, the state of the substrate and any existing membrane, and decide whether the wet area needs a targeted repair or a full re-waterproof
- Preparation and membrane – surfaces are cleaned, primed and set to the correct falls, then an AS 4858-compliant membrane is applied to the heights AS 3740 requires — at least 1800mm in showers, 150mm on other walls and around baths, and across the whole floor — with corners, junctions and penetrations reinforced
- Curing, check and certificate – the membrane cures for the time its manufacturer specifies before any tiling, is inspected while it can still be seen, and you receive a QBCC waterproofing compliance certificate at handover
Not every leaking shower needs to be ripped out: where the membrane is still sound a targeted repair or re-seal may be enough, and where it has failed the honest fix is to strip the wet area back and waterproof it again from the substrate up. We’ll assess yours and tell you which it is.
